Cutting the blue wire, I believe, opens up the ability to transmit on the
aircraft band - a VERY dangerous 'feature' to add as if you transmit
accidentally on that band, you will be sure to see one of those little
ugly green FCC trucks pulling up to your house within 5 minutes.

The air band is AM. This radio can receive on AM, but cannot
transmit on it. Mods can allow you to transmit on VHF-UHF bands, useful
for MARS/CAP and some emergency work that allows you to TX legally
wherever it is useful

Here is some info I compiled from various sources on lead-acid (and SLA).
Corrections welcome. Most of this came from mfg. data sheets.
SEALED LEAD ACID BATTERIES FACT SHEET
CHARGING
========================
Quick Reference: Float: 13.65v
Cycle: 14.70v
Float Charge: 2.25v to 2.28v per cell (Power Sonic) 12v = 13.50 to 13.68
2.25v to 2.30v per cell (Yuasa) 2.275v/cell reccomended
Current: No limit (battery will only draw what it needs)
Cycle Charge: 2.40v to 2.45v per cell (Power Sonic) 12v = 14.40 to 14.70
2.40v to 2.50v per cell (Yuasa) 12v = 14.4 to 15.00
Current: Normal is 20% of capacity. Max is 25% capacity
Charge to 2.45v/cell (12v = 14.70v) until current drops to 0.01C
then switch to float setting.
A fully charged battery will rest at 13.5v to 13.8v
Equalizing Gell-cells is not reccomended
Sealed batteries do not vent. Venting implies damage to battery.
DISCHARGING
========================
Depth of discharge depends upon the load. If the load is small the voltage
should not drop as low. If the load is large the voltage can drop lower.
Discharge limits: at 0.1C - 10.7v
0.2C - 10.5v
0.6C - 9.7v
1C - 9.1v
Cycle service will provide about 1200 cycles at 30% depth of discharge(DOD)
Float Service will cause capacity to drop to 80% after 3.5 years, and 40%
after 4.5 years.
Battery will self discharge at about 3% a month. An idle battery should be
boosted every 9 months.
For current calculations based on capacity, keep in mind that older
batteries will not have the same capacity as the battery is labeled. This
is particularly important in calculating DOD.
TESTING
=========================
BATTERY SHOULD BE AT REST FOR AT LEAST ONE HOUR.
CONSTRUCION

DISCHARGED:ANODE:LEAD SULPHATE, CATHODE:LEAD SULPHATE ELECTROLYTE: 5%

OK, I've got my wire up and have used ladder line to run it
to my MFJ Dif-T tuner. Several people have mentioned that
it's a good idea to stick a low pass filter between this
tuner and the rig because of some harmonics problem(?).
My question is does anyone have a good schematic or plan for
a good low pass filter you would recommend to use in this
applicxation??
Thanks for the feedback!

Hello all! I am in IMMEDIATE NEED of some Motorola
walkie-talkies. I am looking for either Motorola HT-600,
MT-1000, or Motorola Radius P200 units. They must be 5 Watt
units and have at least 6 channels and must cover the 157-174 Mhz.
range. I am also interested in accesories for these units, such as
speaker/microphones, headsets, etc. Let me know what you have.

Agreed. The sigle-earpiece/throat-microphone rig you can buy is
a really good investment for HT's. I've tested two of them, and
found their performance to be very good. It's better to get the
complete package, which has earpiece, mike, and an inline PTT button.
>What are the legalities of using a headset/earphone while mobile? I searched

In Michigan, it is ILLEGAL to wear a full headset while driving.
Full refers to having both ears covered, or the ear canal with
insertions. It is LEGAL for you to wear a one piece earphone or
one sided headset, like the kind you see at drive-throughs at McDonalds.
For the sake of saftey, this is why it is illegal. It is easier
to hear emergency sirens in most cases than it is to see them.
The idea is to utilize both visual and auditory senses, not eliminate
or otherwise engage the other. This is why in some areas you
can be pulled over and ticketed for having loud music/etc from your
car which isn't above the 'disorderly conduct' statute, but is
above the awareness threshold. Go make sense outta that one!

OK. I'm convinced not to buy the Rat Shack HT but instead, I'm now
looking at the FT-530. With all the good features this radio has,
what are the cons (other than being double in price)? My brother
has this rig and loves it. While I will have 8 - 12 weeks to wait
for my ticket from the FCC, I think it's worth saving the extra $200.

I like ft530 except one thing.
The rubber knob (memory dial) was fell off a few times, I has been lucky so
far because I found all the times. Now I glued it.
Also I noticed that power on switch has been turn on and off accidently.
TH78 does not do that, where you have to press a little bit longer
than ft530. Otherwise, this little 530 is very fine.

Hmm... I think this recommendation is kinda moot, since we all follow
the FCC rules to the letter, which states:
97.9 Operator license. - (a) There are 5 classes of operator li-
censes: Novice, Technician, General, Advanced and Amateur Extra. An oper-
ator license authorizes the holder to be the control operator of a station
with the privileges of the operator class specified on the license. The
license document or a photocopy thereof must be in the personal possession
of the licensee at all times when the person is the control operator of a
station.
Looks like driving a car or not, you have better have that little piece
of paper with an FCC seal on it. The Candy Company may have a field
day with you if you don't :-)

Thanks very much for this EXTREMELY pertinent litle tidbit!
It just so happens that I do have a homebrew headset (single ear) and I do have
amateur plates. Now I just have to fix the headset (again...) Think I'll
use the PTT switch out of the old speaker-mic :)
